Fans are getting really nervous as they await the Mortal Kombat 12 big reveal. While they haven’t heard anything concrete in what feels like forever, the developers behind the Mortal Kombat franchise have just released the first real teaser for what very likely is Mortal Kombat 12.

This morning, the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account shared a video of the team behind the iconic fighting game franchise thanking their fans for the series’ 30-year legacy. As the video wrapped up, series co-creator Ed Boon had a few more words to say and after an encouraging hint that the franchise isn’t done yet, we see what looks like sand in an hourglass, which Boon confirmed a teaser – probably for Mortal Kombat 12.

“Thank you Mortal Kombat fans for 30 years of amazing support,” Boon began. “And we’re not quite done yet.”

Immediately after Ed finishes his thank you, a clip of what appears to be a pile of sand rendered with highly detailed video game graphics can be seen. More sand falls from above, just as we would see with an hourglass, and the camera pans up to reveal the top opening of the bin as the falling sand thins out.

Finally we see the last grain of salt fall as the camera zooms in really close. Things slow down to give us a zoomed in view of the grain before it explodes and sends out a huge shockwave.

Boon added on Twitter that the clip is definitely a teaser at the end. “A big THANK YOU from us, with a (not-so-subtle) taste of what’s to come 👍🏻,” Ed wrote.

Of course, any Mortal Kombat fan who has played Mortal Kombat 11 is likely already making the connection to Kronika, the game’s main villain. At the end of the game’s storyline, Liu Kang used Kronika’s hourglass to reset the timeline, leading fans to believe that Mortal Kombat 12 will begin with a restarted timeline.

The hourglass images are very important in Mortal Kombat now, so one in the new teaser definitely hints at something related to the next game in the franchise. But one Twitter user has a theory that might make even more sense, giving it even more weight as it’s an indicator that a Mortal Kombat 12 announcement is coming very soon.

Twitter user Bein Geek responded to the video by asking, “An hourglass? The last grain of sand? Is the announcement coming soon?” This actually makes a lot of sense based on some of the things we’ve seen over the past few months.

Back in late March, Ed Boon sent out a cryptic tweet in which fans clapped loudly about an upcoming Mortal Kombat 12 reveal. Boon simply wrote the word “tick” twelve times, organized into three lines of four, and while some may also attribute that to Kronika, others interpreted it as a countdown to the big reveal.

Additionally, just last week, we learned that several insiders are currently claiming that Mortal Kombat 12’s reveal will take place in May. It doesn’t seem so coincidental that this new teaser was released on May 1st, and by Boon’s own admission, the teaser isn’t subtle at all.

While there hasn’t been any official announcement that NetherRealm Studios’ next project will be Mortal Kombat 12, the title’s existence and name were leaked during a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call. In the clip of the call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav could be heard directly mentioning the game’s title while listing some of the games they had planned for 2023, and since then the community has been sure that MK12 is next in line.
